THE SILENCE OF MAD SPACES | Adesoyin Aderanti

This poem starts with the silence of those who have come before me. // Those who held long, thick, wide brooms, sweeping cob and webs of unending insanity of sane people in insane spaces. // No, insane people in sane spaces. // Wallahi, we are all insane and the spaces are tormented. // By spirits from the water. // Or wind. // Or souls from hell. // Well, all of them. // How else can I tell of the mad man who wears powder blue, tailored suits at the newspaper stand at Arkodi? // The one beside Iya Bidemi, the round red woman that sells puffpuff across the police station that was robbed recently. // Do I tell of the prognosis of whispers of this man as he picks and drops Daily Sun after The Guardian? // Or the symphony of his baritone voice as he suddenly shrieks, writhes and recoils, “Ah”. // Oh no, not that, it's the attenuation as he drops the paper, stands, sits, stands again and walks away without a dime. // Well, he will be back the next day (without a dime). // The news man says he is not mad, na small small wire disconnect for im brain.

                     we are all insane people
               wearing suits, agbada and caps
        the ones on streets in tattered designers,
              forgotten memories and dreads
                            are the sane,
                            they, for one,
                           know the truth;
                         we are all insane.

I end this poem with the silence that follows the “Ah”. Wallahi, wèrè ni gbogbo wa nílùú yìí.

Dictionary:
Wallahi: Truth be told, I swear to God…
Na small small wire disconnect for im brain: He is just under the weather.
wèrè ni gbogbo wa nílùú yìí: Everyone is insane in this town.
