Blessed with nature's gifts
A country filled with
Happiness on a mother's face
As she sells akara, potatoes
To take care of bills
A father's battle
With incessant traffic
His rush to work, poring through
Sheets of papers that will determine his pay
At the end of a surviving month.
A youth completing his school race
Drops his certificate in the darkness of his closet
Takes his clippers, combs and hair spray
Starts a business to meet his daily needs.
This is the Nigerian story
It started with the fight for independence
became a civil war that saw innocent children
Die of starvation and series of diseases
Then we tasted different leaders, deaths
And now, we are here:
Surviving tribalism, nepotism, terrorism
And a government who are the takers but no giver.
