No! It started when
Birds lost their sweet voices.
when snakes crept into strong rooms,
The dead did not become silent today,
it started
in the midst of the celebrations,
of the end of one,
the beginning of another tyrant rule.

T'was long before children stopped going to school,
and machines grew cold.
when hospitals became makeshift morgue,
and swallowed dreams alive.
When the youths are gunned down
for being hopeful,
when elders became suicidal,
because the pension boss turned on them
to mark his mistress's birthday.

No! It started when
Birds lost their sweet voices.
when snakes crept into strong rooms,
and apes ate money rather than plants.
When rodents decided Naira tasted better than lowly crumbs.

It started in the new rule.
