Nationalism

Nationalism is a political ideology and movement that seeks to uphold the interests of a particular nation, especially with the purpose of gaining and maintaining the nation’s sovereignty over its land. It is an ideology by people who believe that loyalty to the nation or state should surpass any other individual or group.

Nationalism and patriotism are similar, yet different concepts. While nationalists seek to promote their nation’s sovereignty and independence from external control and influence, patriots possess a deep love for their nation and a sense of pride in its development. However, it can be deduced that nationalism stems from the patriotic feelings of the citizens of a country.

Nationalists overcome differences in ethnicity and traditional orientation to promote their common interest, the supremacy of their nation. They also rally against philosophy such as religion that hinders national loyalties.

Nationalism is an enemy of colonialism and imperialism. In the 20th century, the world witnessed many colonies, especially in Africa, fighting for their sovereignty and independence. Some of the major leaders of the nationalist cause in Nigeria were Obafemi Awolowo, Nnamdi Azikiwe, Ahmadu Bello and others. Nationalists also oppose all forms of neo-colonialism. They resist nations, especially former colonial masters, who attempt to use economic and political pressures to control or influence their affairs.

Nationalism has been a weapon of freedom, independence and development for so many nations of the world. People who uphold the supremacy of their nation will always work towards the nation's development. Any nation struggling with corruption, nepotism and other factors that hinder development should seek to re-instill the values of national consciousness and immense love for one's nation among the leaders and citizens. This will ensure that everyone works towards the development of the nation.
