Recently, I found out that apart from weakening the body, stress does strange, harmful things to the mind too. It made me question my self-worth and second guess most of the actions I put so much hard work into. But, apart from stress, there are so many other things that can drain you emotionally as well as physically. One of them is people.

I stumbled upon a quote posted on a friend’s status and a wave of realization hit me about how true the quote was. It read, “stay away from anyone or anything that makes you feel inferior, not enough, or less of yourself”.  This quote is very true because negative comments or feelings have a way of sowing unproductivity into a person’s life and if you become unproductive, you’ll slowly loose your relevance to yourself, people around you and the world at large. If you want to stay productive in life, you must learn how to protect your mind from negative vibes.

The following points will guide you on how to create a very safe, healthy, positive and productive atmosphere for your mindset;

1. Only keep positive people around you

This point cannot be overemphasized. If you feel sad, depressed, inferior or drained, you need to check yourself. Apart from exercise, people can also drain your energy. If you have anyone around you that always gives you negative vibes or makes you feel any of these demeaning emotions, put a distance between yourself and the person. Trust me, this is good for your  mental health. Plus, it is very instrumental in maintaining a healthy and positive mindset. Only keep positive people around you or people who will add value to your life without demeaning you.

2. Be Positive

It is not enough to keep positive people around you. You also have to be positive and feel good about yourself. Love yourself and, in doing this, let the love extend to people around you. If you are a negative person, positive people won’t want to be around you. Learn to always acknowledge the good in what people do, don’t keep finding faults. 

3. Take a break

Just like I said earlier, stress has a strange way of infusing negativity into people’s lives. Stay guarded, do not let stress pollute your sanity. Take a break in between assignments, and make sure you always refresh your mind. Never work for long hours at a stretch without taking a break, even if you are a workaholic. The work will still be there if something happens to you. Do not overstress, it is detrimental to your mental health.
