3 Easy Steps To Overcome Procrastination

According to Tim Urban, who runs the blog 'Wait But Why', the first step to stop Procrastinating is to forgive yourself. Sounds weird right? But, it's true.

I mentioned in my post last Monday, that one of the differences between laziness and Procrastination is guilt. A Procrastinator always feels guilty at the end of the day. Procrastination is linked to negative feelings and this same guilt can serve as a trigger for another episode of Procrastination.

In order to prevent the chances of falling into the temptation of Procrastination, you have to forgive yourself and let go of every guilt.

Studies have shown that people who forgive themselves for procrastinating in the first place, have a greater chance of not repeating the action again.

2) YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE IN A CERTAIN MOOD TO PERFORM A TASK!

The sooner you realize this, the better for you. Your emotional state doesn't need to match the task at hand, it's not about feelings.

Instead of focusing on feelings, think about ‘what your next action is supposed to be' and if it looks ambiguous, try to break the task into very small steps.

For instance, if you are asked to write a 1000 word essay and you don't know how to begin, don't leave it till when you think you would feel motivated. Instead, take a paper, write down the date and the title of the Essay.

Even if it's a small action, a little progress will make you feel better about the task and increase your self-esteem which will in turn, spur you to take bigger steps. This will also reduce the desire to procrastinate.

3) YOU DON'T HAVE TO FEEL GOOD ALL THE TIME!

When you procrastinate, you'd realize that a lot of people around you or even you, may think that you have time management problems. Whereas, what you really have is emotion-management problem.

The major reason why we procrastinate is to make ourselves feel good at that particular time because we know that whatever task we have pending will not make us enjoy ourselves. Well, NEWS FLASH! You don't feel good all the time and you have to get on with it! It is not OK to pause your life because the next step won't make you feel good. You've got to man up and take those little and big steps that will bring all your dreams to life!

Live out a fulfilled Monday!
