HE CAME

 

He Came

School had just resumed and I was feeling reluctant to go, maybe because I was going to see Tunde, the one who tore my heart in pieces and made fun of my innocence or Joshua, the gossip who spread the news all over the school. 

I don't know how I will be looked at when I resume. Should I change my school? No, it is just second term. I was still confused when my mom told me to get in the car so she won't be late for work. 

"Good afternoon, please where can I find the principal's office?" someone asked.

I wished I could react rudely because of the pandemonium in my mind but the voice was so cool and soft. 

"It is over there, the building with a flag in front of it" I replied. 

He thanked me and left. Who could that be? Is he a new student? I became eager to get to know him. 

Class begun as usual and my foes reawakened my dead gist. It was annoying but I had to put up with it. They were still gossiping when our teacher came into the class and told us we had a new student. Then he walked in.

"Please welcome our new student, Valentine Collins" he said.

The class roared with sounds of excitement. Then I recognized him and became nervous. I became dumb and could only be lost in stares. Tunde didn't clap but looked at me with longing eyes and tremor of having a competitor. He knew I wouldn't continue weeping for the past we had. 

He was my seat mate and I looked into his eyes often. He had such comforting eyes and his calm demeanor was so attractive.

He was polite and observant. The icing on the cake was his brilliance. He had excellent grades in the few tests he took and was willing to teach those who asked.

I became captivated by his etiquette and wanted to be around him. He was always welcoming and I didn't hide my interest too. We became the talk of the school and funnily, I was proud of the news I heard.

A month with him made me forget a year with Tunde. We read together, ate together at lunch time and also spent free periods gisting too until it happened.

"Good day students, it has been brought to the notice of the school that..."
