Review of "Think Like an Entrepreneur, Act Like a CEO" by Beverly Jones
There is a popular saying which goes, “those who fail to plan, plan to fail”, and this quote is pertinent to the background of the first chapter of this book, as it deals with “To launch Something New, You Need a Good Plan”. Yes, the world does not just end at the plans of people, as positive as their intentions might be, but the aspect of planning, especially as business leaders cannot be overemphasized.
As someone who aims at being successful in a career, the author mentions that one of the first lessons she learned in her career was “nobody else was in charge of making me successful”, and this is true, it all boils down to the person seeking to succeed to be successful. Now, you have a plan to be successful at the new job, career, project… which is totally your responsibility, how do you get off to a great start on that plan?
1. Learn what the boss wants: be a detective, do not base your performance solely on what is entailed in the job description. This does not mean doing degrading things not included in the job description, but “study the organization’s mission and consider how your contribution – and hers (that of the manager) – fit within the big picture.”
2. Listen and learn: we learn a lot by actively listening to people, especially those who have been on the job before you.
3. Do what you say you will: “deliver on every commitment you make, no matter how small.”
4. Be on time: The extra effort put into showing up timely gives employees and teammates the sense of respect and commitment to the task and to the team, so, show up on time.
Giving you four out of eight, PLAN to read the rest. While this chapter ends with questions to ask to create a quick and easy plan for launching a new job or career. This is just chapter 1 of 50, and you can only imagine how the rest of the book would impact your journey to stardom.
‘Kore Akarakiri.
