Something Looks Like Pain In The Eyes Of A Black Boy

To deflower a psalm would be to turn it into a requiem — to change holy melodies into dirge that ash in the mind of a Black boy. How do you teach him to weave his breath peacefully? How do you tell him that the stranger who took his parents away isn't death but life asking for it's due course? That is to say, this black boy is trying so hard to orchestrate his sanity, but with every word from the priest, he breaks into an endless supplication of grief. He wonders when this mass would end, waiting, waiting for when the preacher's mouth would stop leaking sermons and verses. In him, there is a waterfall of pain already, with demons in cruise boat experiencing leisure. How then do you teach his mouth to pray and those lips how to swim in holy waters? How do you save him from sinking in the river that drowned his mother's memories? How will his prayers ever stop transmuting into grief.
