Our Adage versus Our Reality

Good day to you.

Today, let’s take a look at a Yoruba adage, among others, which speak about the facts, influence our beliefs and which does not necessarily mean the truth. 

"Irini si, ni isoni lojo" which means "the way you dress is the way you will be addressed". This is the height of prejudice we preach against, but still, we glorify it.

A scenario: Imagine you have a job interview today and you have to meet with the board of directors. On getting to the company’s building, you met a man who wears a polo with a pair of shorts with dreadlocks on his head. You treat him disrespectfully, because you feel he's just one of "those guys", but getting to the interview room, you saw the same man, but now as the owner of the company… Imagine your shock.

So, if you feel like you can just treat people anyway because of the way they're dressed, I pray you won't end up destroying your life in the process of proving that "my culture or the culture told me that irini si ni isoni lojo.

 People are free to do things the way they like because they own their life, accept people like that, and don’t try to judge them with the way they look because you don't know them. 

So treat everybody equally, respect everyone, you can't afford to treat anybody less. Stop judging people with the default mindset the culture and society had placed in you.

Remember, for you to win the acceptance of people, you have to accept them also – the way they are.
